Canon SX740HS — powerful P+S!
Many people have made the decision to use their smart-phones as their primary “camera” these days. And I get that…smart-phones are very convenient, they’re always with us, and in many ways, they’re…good enough. But I really do think that we’ve traded quality for convenience, and that may bite us in the butt yet!
Smart-phones aren’t often great in low-light, they do flash horrrrribly, and they don’t do well at zooming either. Any dedicated camera — whether a point-and-shoot or DSLR — will likely do better at those things than a smart-phone. The Canon SX740HS definitely does better in the Zoom Department — with its 40x OPTICAL zoom, it can reach out to pretty much any photo-subject!
I recently did an 8-mile hike on the Ice Age Trail, Bald Bluff Segment, and carried the SX740HS in a convenient ThinkTankPhoto pouch. The ThinkTankPhoto pouch is well-designed and has a strong velcro method of attaching to your belt.
I also took the camera along on a trailrun along the Milwaukee River! Wide-angle, tele-photo — this camera does both pretty well!

I would really suggest that people reconsider using a smartphone as their main camera…with the powerful optical zoom lenses on compact cameras, cameras like the SX740HS do things a smartphone cannot. And, with built-in wi-fi capabilities, and dedicated transfer apps, it is quite easy to share images from your camera to your phone, allowing you to have these superior images at your convenience, without having to give up image-quality!
