Mike Crivello’s has gotten its first few Canon EOS R cameras and RF 24–105mm/f4 L IS USM lens in stock…and wow, it DOES seem awful nice, and it’s pretty exciting to have another full-frame mirrorless camera for our customers to consider.

I got to try out the camera for a brief period. So, this is defintely a “first impressions” post and not a thorough review.

The camera feels good — robust and solid, it feels like a good evolution of the EOS cameras that came before. One surprise I noticed was the absence of the quick-dial that is normally on the back of the camera. That feature has been moved to the top panel, surrounding the mode button.

I took the camera out with me to the Milwaukee Film Fest, and was very impressed with its low-light performance. Autofocus seemed fast enough to me, and the quality of the high-ISO files looked real nice!

Take a look at this picture, and its 100% screen-cap. This was at ISO 1600, a TWO-SECOND exposure, that was HAND-HELD! The only support I had was in leaning against the row of movie-seats in front of me.

Overall, for my limited use, the low-light abilities of this camera were pretty impressive!

The following day, I took the camera with me to FUEL Cafe and made a few snapshots there, too, by Riverwest Radio, and down in the Third Ward.

The control layout will take some getting used to. It’s apparent that Canon has built some new tricks into this camera, as ought to be expected. Overall though, my impressions were very positive for this camera and lens!
